THIS ALSAFE APPLIES TO NAVY AND MARINE CORPS COMMANDS. THE 101 CRITICAL DAYS OF SUMMER SAFETY CAMPAIGN IS AN ANNUAL NAVY AND MARINE CORPS INITIATIVE SPEARHEADED BY NAVAL SAFETY COMMAND (NAVSAFECOM) TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF POTENTIAL RISKS RELATED TO OFF-DUTY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES, AS WELL AS OTHER SUMMERTIME ENDEAVORS. IT IS THE LONGEST VACATION PERIOD OF THE YEAR FOR MILITARY MEMBERS, BEGINNING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND ENDING LABOR DAY WEEKEND. SUMMER ALSO INCLUDES FOUR HOLIDAYS, WHICH ARE FREQUENTLY COMMAND -APPROVED EXTENDED WEEKENDS FOR UNIFORMED PERSONNEL. THIS YEAR, THE CAMPAIGN RUNS FROM 26 MAY 2023 TO 4 SEPTEMBER 2023. 2. DURING THE 101 CRITICAL DAYS OF SUMMER IN 2022, THE DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY LOST 29 SAILORS AND MARINES TO PREVENTABLE OFF-DUTY MISHAPS. A GENERAL LACK OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND COMPLACENCY ARE ROOT CAUSES IN NUMEROUS OFF-DUTY MISHAPS EVERY SUMMER. IT IS IMPERATIVE TO MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT MINDSET. NAVSAFECOM WILL PROVIDE CAMPAIGN MATERIAL IN MID-APRIL TO ASSIST SAFETY PROFESSIONALS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO EDUCATE OUR SAILORS AND MARINES ON HOW TO MITIGATE POTENTIAL RISKS OF SUMMERTIME ACTIVITIES SO THEY CAN SAFELY ENJOY THIS TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. 3. THIS YEAR'S CAMPAIGN PRESENTATION WILL INCLUDE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS OF CLASS A-C OFF-DUTY MISHAPS REPORTED DURING THE LAST TWO SUMMER SEASONS IN THE RISK MANAGEMENT INFORMATION (RMI) MISHAP REPORTING SYSTEM. SAFETY PROFESSIONALS WITH ACCESS TO RMI CAN RESEARCH THE EXAMPLES WITH ONE CAUTION: WHILE HELPFUL FOR GENERAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR USE BY SAFETY PROFESSIONALS, AVOID GOING BEYOND FACTUAL INFORMATION BY RELEASING PRIVILEGED SAFETY INFORMATION (PSI) OR PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION (PII). NOTE: COMMANDER, NAVAL SAFETY COMMAND IS THE SOLE CUSTODIAN AND SOLE RELEASING AUTHORITY FOR PSI. THE SAFETY PRIVILEGE IS MEANT TO ENCOURAGE CANDOR FROM WITNESSES AND BOARD MEMBERS TO IDENTIFY ROOT CAUSES OF MISHAPS AND TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE MISHAPS. PLEASE CONTACT NAVSAFECOM WITH ANY QUESTIONS. 4. NAVAL SAFETY COMMAND MISHAP DATA INDICATES THAT OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS, THE NUMBER OF MISHAPS THAT ARE NOT PMV-4 AND PMV-2 RELATED HAS REMAINED CONSISTENT WITHOUT ANY TROUBLING UPWARD TRENDS. THE DEDICATED EFFORTS BY OUR LEADERS, SAFETY PROFESSIONALS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS PERSONNEL AT ALL LEVELS THROUGHOUT THE ENTERPRISE ARE CRITICAL TO KEEPING SUMMER SAFETY AWARENESS HIGH. NAVSAFECOM ENCOURAGES THE NAVAL ENTERPRISE TO CONTINUE GETTING OUT IN FRONT AND NOT LET THEIR GUARD DOWN IN THEIR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS TO EDUCATE ABOUT RISK AND UNDERSTAND BEHAVIORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO SUMMER-RELATED MISHAPS. 5.
