This ALSAFE applies to all US Navy afloat commands. Reference (a), section b, chapter 4 lists requirements for afloat hearing conservation programs. Paragraphs 5 and 6 on pages B4-6 and B4-7 specifically lists the values for when single or double hearing protection devices are required. This ALSAFE serves as official change guidance for updated values to keep Reference (a) in alignment with reference (b): a. Areas or equipment where the noise levels are 85 dba or greater, but less than 104 dba or 140 dbp or greater but less than 165 dbp shall be labeled as noise hazardous and shall require the use of single hearing protection. b. Areas or equipment where the noise levels are 104 dba or greater or 165 dbp or greater shall be labeled as noise hazardous and shall require the use of double hearing protection. 2. All current ship industrial hygiene surveys are executed IAW reference (b) which contains the correct values reflected above. No IH survey retesting is required based solely on this ALSAFE as this ALSAFE merely brings the two reference documents into alignment. 3. This message serves as an official change to reference (a); it shall Remain in effect until updated or cancelled by Naval Safety Command/OPNAV N09F.// BT #0001 NNNN
