Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning! I hope this tri-weekly finds you well. I will use this update to introduce the NAVSAVENVTRACEN Commanding Officer and provide a couple of training center updates. On 7 August 2025, NAVSAFENVTRACEN marked a special milestone with our Change of Command ceremony. We bid Fair Winds and Following Seas to CDR Schaal and we welcomed CDR Benjamin J. Barrus as our new Commanding Officer. CDR Barrus brings extensive operational, safety, and environmental expertise from assignments across the Fleet, Navy hospitals, inspection teams, and joint service operations, most recently serving as Officer in Charge of Safety and Environmental for the 3d Marine Logistics Group in Okinawa, Japan. We look forward to the energy, experience, and perspective he brings as we continue advancing our mission to deliver world-class safety, occupational health, and environmental training. You can view CDR Barrus’ bio here, https://navalsafetycommand.navy.mil/Learning/NAVSAFENVTRACEN/Commanding-Officer/.

Funding Status: Environmental budget controls have been received, and at present, 119 courses remain unfunded. As the year progresses, any savings identified will be strategically reallocated to maximize training opportunities. Safety and Occupational Health budget controls are still under review, but the outlook remains positive. The good news: both community courses scheduled for FY26 QTR1 are fully funded and moving forward as planned. You can view the FY26 schedule using the attached file or by visiting our website, https://navalsafetycommand.navy.mil/Learning/NAVSAFENVTRACEN/Course-Schedule/.

Live Session Access: If you are accessing a NAVSAFENVTRACEN course using a Nautilus device, please be aware of the following critical information regarding access to our live Adobe Connect sessions:

  • NMCI Internet Restriction: You must be connected to a non-NMCI internet connection to access the Adobe Connect live sessions.
  • The Issue: Connecting directly to the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), especially via a hard-wired connection on base, will prevent access to the live session.
  • The Solution: Use one of the following options to attend live sessions successfully:
    • A Nautilus device connected to non-NMCI internet
    • A NMCI device connected to the NMCI network or non-NMCI network
    • A personal computer connected to home internet or a public Wi-Fi network (if permitted by your command)
    • A personal hotspot from your phone

We understand this may require adjustments to your setup and appreciate your cooperation in ensuring seamless participation. Over the next three weeks we are convening the global online courses listed in the table below, please ensure your enrolled students can access the live sessions. They can test their access here,  https://navsafetc.adobeconnect.com/livesessiontest/. If successful, they will be able to open the test link and view a slide stating they were successful.
