NOTICE:  DIGITIZING MICROFILM CONTAINING AVIATION SAFETY INVESTIGATION REPORTS FROM 1942 TO DECEMBER 31, 1969

On July 23, 2024, the Naval History and Heritage Command transferred to the Naval Safety Command all microfilm containing Aviation Safety Investigation Reports dating from 1942 to December 31, 1969.  In order to access those reports for review and release, the Naval Safety Command is having the records digitized. 

While the digitizing process is underway, Aviation Safety Investigation Reports from 1942 to December 31, 1969 will be unavailable to all requesters however, these records will be available as soon as possible after the digitization is complete.  We are anticipating this extensive process to take approximately 12 to 18 months. 

Current status of Aviation Safety Investigation Reports:

1942 – December 31, 1969 – Will be unavailable as of July 23, 2024 until further notice.

January 1, 1970 – current – Will be reviewed for release upon receiving request.

Records Maintained by the Naval Safety Command (NSC):

The Naval Safety Command (NSC) is the custodian and designated release authority for all Safety Investigation Report (SIR) involving the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps which were conducted pursuant to OPNAVINST 3750.6S and OPNAVINST 5102.1E.

How to submit a Request:

FOIA requests to the Naval Safety Command may be submitted in writing, by facsimile, e-mail, or electronic form. Please clearly mark the mailing envelope, facsimile, or e-mail “Freedom of Information Act Request”.
 
Minimum Requirements for (written and electronic FOIA requests):

  • Request must be in writing pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act. 
  • A detailed description of the requested information ie. (type of incident (plane crash, collision at sea, etc.); date or time frame of the incident; geographic location of the mishap (specifically as possible, if known); and any additional information (bureau number, name of command, type of aircraft, etc.)
  • Agreement to pay fees or ask for a fee waiver pursuant to 32 C.F.R. § 286 and OMB guidelines
  • Your contact information (Mailing address, phone number, and email address)
