Commander Benjamin J. Barrus
Commander Benjamin J. Barrus was commissioned in 2008 after graduating from Texas Tech University. His first assignment was with Naval Hospital Bremerton, Washington, where he provided Industrial Hygiene support to 90 ashore and afloat commands. Subsequent U.S. Navy assignments have included: USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Board of Inspection and Survey, Naval Hospital Sigonella, and Navy Environmental Preventive Medicine Unit SIX for an additional duty assignment as Deputy Director of Safety and Occupational Health and Environmental Protection to Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. In 2021 he deployed to Yokota Air Base, Japan, to serve on a joint COVID task force reporting to Commander, United States Forces Japan. He reported as the Officer in Charge of Safety and Environmental for the 3d Marine Logistics Group, Okinawa, Japan, until May 2025, earning a Fleet Marine Force warfare qualification while working with 3d MLG.
Cmdr. Barrus assumed his current position as Commander, Naval Safety and Environmental Training Center in August 2025. Cmdr. Barrus’ awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Five), Meritorious Unit Commendation (two), Armed Forces Service Medal (two), and various other personal and unit citations.
