Col Bret "Sunshine" Knickerbocker
Col. Bret J. Knickerbocker currently serves as the Deputy Commander, Naval Safety Command. He is a native of Tallahassee, Florida, and a 2003 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering.
As an MV-22B Osprey pilot, he has been assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron (VMMT) 204 as a student and instructor, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 263, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 261, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 268 and Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 365.
Col. Knickerbocker’s operational deployments included Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Crisis Response – Africa (SPMAGTF-CR-AF), Marine Rotational Force Darwin (MRF-D), and as the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) of the North African Response Force (NARF).
Col. Knickerbocker received master’s degrees from both the Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various other medals and ribbons.
